Joanna began musical life as a ‘cellist growing up in Bedford but, on beginning lessons with Jane Emmanuel, discovered a love for singing. After two years as a sixth form choral scholar at St Paul’s Bedford, she went up to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, to study Natural Sciences. During this time she sang as a Choral Exhibitioner at Selwyn and Jesus Colleges. Highlights included performing world premieres as part of the John Armitage Memorial Concerts, BBC television broadcasts, tours and a solo recital. Not finding herself quite busy enough, she also captained the Gonville and Caius Women’s Football team.
After completing a Masters at Royal Holloway and a short spell working in the City, Joanna was pulled back to the family business of teaching, spending two years as a Biology Teacher and House Tutor at Sevenoaks School after her PGCE. Joanna taught Biology at The Portsmouth Grammar School, where she also ran the Bronze DofE programme and was Deputy Head of Years 9 to 11. She is now Head of Biology at Magdalen College School, Oxford. As well as the Nelson Consort, she is a member of the Knole Singers and Portsmouth Cathedral Consort. With both choirs, and the PGS Chamber Choir, she has sung on several CD recordings, BBC radio broadcasts, concerts and tours, in addition to occasional solo work.
