Founded in 2014 by director Oliver Hancock, The Nelson Consort is an eight-voice chamber choir dedicated to promoting music for unaccompanied voices, drawing attention to lesser-known repertoire whilst also performing more familiar works to a very high standard.
The Nelson Consort has established itself as one of the area's foremost chamber choirs. The choir has received particular praise for their performance of Norweigan composer Ola Gjeilo's Ubi caritas, and has given the world premieres of James Dunlop's Windrush, William Drakett's arrangement of Steal Away, and June Clark's Run, shepherds, run, all of which were written for and dedicated to The Nelson Consort. In 2015, the choir took part in the Botley Music Festival, and performed as part of the 2016 Portsmouth Festivities.
The choir is particularly pleased to have forged a strong relationship with St George's Church, Portsea. Recent concerts have included Herbert Howell's Requiem and Take him, earth, for cherishing, Paul Mealor's 'Rose Cycle' Now sleeps the crimson petal, settings of Robert Bridges' Seven Poems by Gerald Finzi, Benjamin Britten's Hymn to Saint Cecilia, and John Rutter's Hymn to the Creator of Light, alongside compositions by contemporary composers Cecilia McDowall, Jonathan Dove, Grayston Ives, Robert McCormick, Timothy Parsons, and David Briggs.

'discretely and sensitively directed by Oliver Hancock... this excellent performance clearly demonstrated the individual skill of each member of the group'
